Why lead used to be added to gasoline

Today I found out why lead used to be added to gasoline.

“Tetraethyl lead” was used in early model cars to help reduce engine knocking, boost octane ratings, and help with wear and tear on valve seats within the motor. Due to concerns over air pollution and health risks, this type of gas was slowly phased out starting in the late 1970′s and banned altogether in all on-road vehicles in the U.S. in 1995.

The map of the world shows the temperature anomaly by location over time. The chart at the bottom, shows the global land-surface temperature anomaly. The Berkeley Earth analysis shows 0.911 degrees Centigrade of land warming (+/- 0.042 C) since the 1950s.

A business man got on an elevator in a building.

When he entered the elevator,

there was a blonde already inside and she greeted him by saying,

“T-G-I-F” (letters only).

He smiled at her and replied,

“S-H-I-T” (letters only).”

She looked at him, puzzled, and said,

“T-G-I-F” again.

He acknowledged her remark again by answering,


The blond was trying to be friendly,

so she smiled her biggest smile and said as sweetly as possibly

“T-G-I-F” another time.

The man smiled back to her and once again replied with a quizzical expression,


The blond finally decided to explain things, and this time she said,

“T-G-I-F, Thank Goodness It’s Friday, get it?”

The man answered,

“Sorry, Honey, It’s Thursday.”
